01Overview

Mellotron V recreates the Mellotron, the mid-1960s keyboard that played tape recordings of orchestral instruments through a key-per-tape mechanism. Arturia builds the plugin around a modeled version of that tape engine, with controls for flutter, tape saturation and mechanical noise. Producers can use the classic tape sounds directly or import their own samples and run them through the same vintage tape character.

Mellotron Tape Sounds and Modeling Controls

The plugin includes 65 original tape racks taken from MKI, MKII, M300 and M400 Mellotrons. Each rack gives a different instrument character, from strings and brass to woodwinds.

The modeling parameters shape the tape behavior. Flutter, tape saturation, mechanics noise and noise floor can each be adjusted. Velocity controls volume, and aftertouch controls flutter, so performance gestures change the sound as you play.

Sample Import, Tracks and Presets

Mellotron V accepts user sample import, so you can pass any sound through the Mellotron tape engine. Three tracks let you select or blend samples, and each sample has its own amplitude envelope and loop controls. Time stretching is available for user samples.

The plugin ships with 61 presets to start from. They are useful for seeing how the tape racks and modulation settings combine before you build your own patches.
