01Overview

Fog Convolver 2 is a rebuilt version of AudioThing's convolution plugin. It loads two impulse responses, or a single true stereo or quad impulse, and processes them in one of six modes. Each impulse has its own filter, LFOs and EQ, so the plugin works as a creative effect as well as a conventional reverb. The package also includes a built-in space simulator and an impulse generator for building artificial spaces from scratch.

Sound Design and Convolution Reverb Modes

The plugin runs two impulse response engines that can be set to single, serial, parallel, parallel mix or true stereo routing. In true stereo mode, the two channels of a stereo impulse are used together to recreate a stereo image. Two separate impulses can also be combined to create experimental stereo spaces.

Each impulse has two LFOs with ten waveforms and eighteen destinations, a multi-mode filter that can sit before, inside or after the impulse, and a five-band graphic EQ. Developer AudioThing also includes chorus, phaser, compressor and waveshaper effects on the chain, which push the convolution beyond realistic room sounds.

Workflow, Presets and Impulse Library

Audio files in WAV or AIFF format can be loaded by drag and drop or through the built-in browser. Dropping two files assigns them to IR1 and IR2 automatically. The preset browser supports custom categories, tags and ratings, and a snapshot system and randomizer help you explore variations quickly.

The library contains 740+ impulse responses in eight banks. They cover vintage digital effects, real spaces, public domain archival recordings, OpenAIR halls and churches, vintage microphones, and sources made with test equipment and unusual objects.
