01Overview

Organetta is a software instrument built for the full version of the Kontakt engine. Its source is a small portable reed organ made in the late 1950s by Hohner. The sound is produced by an electric fan that pushes air through a set of brass reeds, so the tone sits somewhere between a melodica and an accordion. The instrument is sampled from that original, with the fan noise removed from the notes and captured separately so you can add it back or play it on its own.

Sound Character and Recording Approach

The samples were captured with two microphones: a large diaphragm condenser mic and a piezo attached to the chassis. Switching between them gives two distinct perspectives on the same instrument.

The package includes two intensity layers and six round robin captures of the key down and key up noises. These add small variations and mechanical detail, which helps the playing feel more natural when you play repeated notes.

Long note samples of 17 seconds and fan samples of more than 30 seconds give you material to work with for sustained parts.

Kontakt Instruments and Workflow

Organetta ships as six Kontakt Instruments in the .nki format, using 144 samples at 44.1kHz and 24-bit. The total size is 618 MB.

You can choose to add the fan noise to the mix or play it alone by pressing the green keys, which lets you use the fan as a rhythmic or textural element separate from the notes.

The instrument requires the full version of Kontakt 4.2.4 or higher. Samples are also provided as WAV files, so you can use them outside Kontakt if needed.
