01Overview

miniBit is built around 8-bit and chiptune sounds, with 18 waveforms, a sub oscillator, custom waveforms and a built-in bitcrusher. AudioThing says the synth draws on the sound of classic game consoles and retro computers from the 80s and 90s. Beyond chiptune leads, the developer notes that the 8-step stepper can produce noisy, snare-like hits as well as ambient sub tones. The plugin includes 128 presets and a preset randomizer.

Oscillators, Custom Waves and Sound Character

The main oscillator offers 18 waveforms, and each one is paired with a sub oscillator that plays a square wave one octave below. The waveforms are not bandlimited, so they produce aliasing, which contributes to the raw, retro character.

The Custom Waveform Editor lets you draw your own waves across 32 steps, with 8 waveform slots per preset. You can start from the built-in examples. Each preset keeps its own custom waves, and Copy/Paste buttons let you move a wave to another preset.

Sequencer, Bitcrusher and Modulation

The 8-step sequencer can automate pitch, volume, cutoff, resonance, waveform and downsampling, with each track randomizable using the dice buttons. Sequencing the waveforms can produce sounds similar to early trackers and wavetable synths.

The built-in bitcrusher adds further grit, and the LFO can target multiple destinations. Poly and mono modes with glide, a 2-pole lowpass/highpass filter, and pitch and volume envelopes complete the signal path.
