01Overview

Toy Piano is a software instrument based on a 2-octave upright toy piano. The sound comes from metal bars struck by plastic hammers, which gives a tone similar to a glockenspiel but deeper and warmer. AudioThing sampled the instrument with the lid closed and open, so you can switch between two main sample sets. The library also includes percussion samples recorded on the wooden case and a set of ambient, pad and drone instruments built from sample start and loop techniques and effects.

Sound Character and Sample Sets

The core of the library is the toy piano itself, captured in two main sample sets: closed lid and open lid. Each key has three round robin samples, which helps reduce repetition when you play the same note repeatedly. Six random release samples add variation to note endings.

The samples are 44.1 kHz / 24-bit. The developer describes the sound as lighter and warmer than a glockenspiel, with a percussive attack from the plastic hammers striking the metal bars.

Percussion, Sound Design and Instrument Structure

Beyond the piano, the library includes percussion samples made by playing the wooden case with hands, nylon brushes and rubber mallets. These can be used as rhythmic or textural elements alongside the main instrument.

The package contains 10 Kontakt Instruments (.nki) and 6 Kontakt Multis (.nkm). The Multis let you combine instruments into layered or split setups. The custom GUI gives direct access to the controls for tweaking the sound.

Toy Piano requires the full version of Kontakt 3.5 or higher. It is a software instrument and not a physical product.

What formats does Toy Piano include?

What is the difference between the two main sample sets?

One set was recorded with the piano lid closed and the other with the lid open, giving two different tonal characters for the same instrument.
