01Overview

Zitherette is built around a small hand-held zither with eight strings over a neck-less soundbox. Soundiron describes its tone as smooth and dark, with a clean attack and a long, natural decay. Softer notes sound close to a harp, while harder notes bend at the attack with a pronounced twang. The instrument is delivered as an open-format Kontakt library, so it works as a plugin inside a Kontakt host.

Sampled Pluck and Palm Mute Articulations

The library includes multi-sampled articulations for each of the eight strings. Each string has an average of 8 velocity layers with 4 round-robin variations per layer, which helps repeated notes avoid sounding identical.

Palm mute release triggers are included as well, with 2 velocities and 4 round robins per note. The pluck and palm mute articulations are mapped chromatically across all eight notes, and each individual note is also available as a single articulation tuned across the full key range.

The pluck was captured close and dry in wide stereo.

Controls, Arpeggiator and FX Rack

The custom interface offers control over volume swell, attack, release, transient offset, vibrato, filters, tuning, articulation switching, cross-fading and layering. An LFO section provides selectable shape, target, speed, intensity, tempo-syncing and fade-in controls.

The filter section offers 12 filter types that can be assigned to velocity, mod wheel, expression, aftertouch, key position and sequencer. An advanced arpeggiator and key and scale locking help with playing parts.

A modular FX rack holds 18 DSP effect modules, including convolution reverb with custom rooms, halls, chambers and FX environments.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What do I need to use Zitherette?

Zitherette requires the full retail version of Native Instruments Kontakt 5.5.2 or later. The free Kontakt Player does not fully support this open-format library and can only run it in a time-limited demo mode.

Which operating systems does Zitherette support?

Zitherette is listed for Windows and macOS. Windows XP or higher and Mac OS X 10.9 or higher are the stated minimum versions, with a dual-core CPU and 3 GB of RAM recommended.

How large is the Zitherette library?

The library takes up 766 MB installed and contains 319 stereo samples in 24-bit, 48 kHz WAV format, along with one master NKI instrument bank and 20 sound-designed FX and ambient presets.

Can I use the samples outside Kontakt?

Soundiron says the sample directories are unlocked, so they can be used in other WAV-compatible software, samplers and synth formats.
