01Overview

Luminabells is a sample library that captures the sound of old filament-style incandescent bulbs. Soundiron recorded bulbs of many sizes and shapes, striking them with fingers, mallets and other tools to draw out each one's tone. The result is a mix of tuned and untuned percussion, sustaining melodic tones and otherworldly effects, delivered as a single master instrument for Kontakt on Windows and macOS.

Sound and Character of the Light Bulb Samples

The library covers tuned and untuned resonant dings, rings, pings, pops and clacks from 40 bulbs. Soundiron tapped the glass with several implements and worked to excite each bulb's filament without breaking it.

The recordings were quiet, so they were boosted to usable levels. That also raised some low-frequency rumble and high-frequency hiss. The developer left these in place on purpose, saying they add complexity and texture to the sounds.

The samples are 24-bit / 48 kHz uncompressed PCM WAV files, totaling 1,649 stereo files and about 1.2 GB installed.

Controls, Modulation and FX Rack in Kontakt

The Kontakt interface offers automation-ready controls for swell, attack, release, offset, vibrato, filter, coarse and fine pitch, articulation switching, cross-fading and layering.

An LFO system provides selectable shapes, modulation targets, speed, intensity, tempo sync and fade-in time. Twelve lowpass, highpass and FX filters can be assigned modulation sources such as velocity, mod wheel, expression, aftertouch, key position and step-sequencer control. A customizable arpeggiator adds a velocity table and control over direction, timing, swing, randomization and duration. A key and scale lock keeps notes within common scales.

The modular FX rack has 10 slots and 18 DSP effect modules, including phaser, flanger, delay, distortion, amp and cab simulators, compressors, EQ and rotator. The reverb uses convolution impulse responses with 99 rooms, halls, chambers and outdoor spaces, plus 40 custom FX impulses.
