01Overview

Satin is built around tape machines rather than a single emulated model. u-he describes it as a set of tape machine architectures covering major historical developments in tape technology, from professional machines to cheaper units. Beyond the core saturation and transient-smoothing character, it adds a multi-tap tape delay, a through-zero tape flanger and classic noise-reduction compander circuits, all controlled from one panel that can link several instances together.

Tape Character, Controls and Metering

The two large gain knobs set input and output levels, and a combined VU and peak meter shows signal level, with switchable RMS mode and a variable reference level. Speed is continuously adjustable from 7.5 to 30 ips, and the machine model is recalculated as you change it. Pre-emphasis gives control over transients, tone and fidelity.

The tape itself is fully adjustable. Saturation, transient smoothing and high-frequency compression sit alongside imperfections such as head bump, wow and flutter, asperity noise and hiss, so you can dial in as much or as little of the tape's character as the mix needs. A service panel exposes the tape, head and circuit parameters, and a built-in analyzer helps with alignments such as biasing.

Delay, Flanging and Studio Grouping

The delay offers two or four taps with variable routing, cyclic modulation, feedback filtering and a limiter. It can produce organic space or precisely synchronized patterns when host-synchronized. The flanger is a through-zero tape flanger rather than an LFO-based digital effect, and the trigger activates a single pass.

In Studio mode, each instance can be assigned to one of eight groups, where one instance acts as a remote control for the others in that group, so multiple tracks can be glued together as if they ran on one multitrack tape.
