01Overview

Phonautograms is built from some of the earliest human sound recordings, a vocal scale sung by Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville and preserved through the First Sounds project. Soundiron spliced and edited these sustains into a chromatic solo vocal instrument, then processed them into pads, drones, textures and resynthesized drums. The library is delivered as an open-format Kontakt bank with 147 stereo samples and 445 MB installed.

Sound Design and Controls

The instrument is built around a multi-layer Kontakt interface with automation-ready controls for swell, attack, release, offset, vibrato, filter, coarse and fine pitch, articulation switching, cross-fading and layering.

An adaptable LFO offers selectable shape, modulation target, speed, intensity, tempo sync and fade-in time. Twelve lowpass, highpass and FX filters can be assigned to modulation sources such as velocity, mod wheel, expression, aftertouch, key position and step-sequencer tables.

Arpeggiator, Scale Lock and FX Rack

The customizable arpeggiator provides a velocity table and control over direction, timing, swing, randomization and duration. A key and scale lock constrains notes to common scales and keys for melodic composition and live playing.

The modular FX rack offers 18 DSP modules, including phaser, flanger, delay, distortion, amp and cabinet simulators, compressors, EQ and rotator, assignable across 10 slots in any order. The reverb uses convolution impulses for rooms, halls, chambers and outdoor spaces, plus 40 custom FX impulses.
