01Overview

Oddball is built from sounds captured on inexpensive digital keyboards and then heavily processed. The collection covers nostalgic '90s synth emulations, cheesy percussion loops and hits, and ambient textures. The developer positions it as a toolkit for game and animation scores, with eccentric material such as electrical noise, tuning frequency modulations, and a toy vibraphone. White, brown and pink noise generators are included for blending into synthesized patches.

Sound Character and Sound Design Controls

The sounds are deliberately quirky. Soundiron says the patches include electrical noises, tuning frequency modulations and a toy vibraphone, along with white, brown and pink noise generators for layering.

The Kontakt interface offers automation-ready controls for swell, attack, release, offset, vibrato, filter, coarse and fine pitch, articulation switching, cross-fading and layering. Twenty custom sound-designed FX and ambient presets provide starting points.

Modulation, Arpeggiator and FX Rack

An adaptable LFO system offers selectable shape, modulation target, speed, intensity, tempo sync and fade-in time. Twelve low-pass, high-pass and FX filters can be assigned modulation sources such as velocity, mod wheel, expression, aftertouch, key position and step-sequencer table control.

The arpeggiator provides a velocity table and control over direction, timing, swing, randomization and duration. A key and scale lock constrains notes to common scales. A modular FX rack with ten slots accepts 18 effect modules in any order, and the convolution reverb includes 99 rooms, halls, chambers and outdoor environments plus 40 custom FX impulses.

Questions, answered

What do I need to use Oddball?

Oddball requires the full retail version of Native Instruments Kontakt 5.1.0 or above. It will not run fully in the free Kontakt Player, which only allows a limited demo mode.

Which operating systems does Oddball support?

Oddball is listed for Windows 7 or higher and macOS 10.9 or higher. The developer recommends an SSD or SATA hard drive for this library.

Can I use the Oddball samples outside Kontakt?

Yes. The sample directories are unlocked, and the WAV samples can be used in other WAV-compatible software, samplers and synths.
