01Overview

Cruiser is a sample-based instrument for Kontakt that recreates the sound of an early-1980s subtractive synth. The developer says the source instrument is the Siel Cruise, sold in Europe and rebranded in the United States as the Sequential Fugue. The library covers leads, pads, and rhythmic patches, with sustains and staccato samples recorded for each key. It is aimed at producers working in retro-leaning styles who want a vintage synth voice without owning the hardware.

Sound Character and Sample Content

Cruiser was recorded in a dry studio using a pair of Neumann TLM 103 microphones. The library includes sustain and staccato samples for each key, along with chord sustains, chord staccatos, and acoustic effects samples. Its 16 preset banks are built around the retro, neon-tinged sound the developer targets, and 20 custom-designed synth and FX presets extend the range from leads to pads.

The main instrument preset combines performance controls, vibrato, glide, an LFO, filters, an arpeggiator, and a full FX rack. Because the library is recorded from a monophonic and polyphonic source, it can play single-note leads with legato portamento or switch to polyphonic playing when glide is set to 0.

Controls, Effects, and Workflow

The interface exposes volume, attack, release, transient offset, vibrato, and octave layering. The Glide control handles legato and portamento leads. The LFO system offers selectable shape, modulation target, speed, intensity, tempo sync, and fade-in time. Thirteen filter types are available, with modulation assignable to velocity, mod wheel, expression, aftertouch, key position, and a step-sequencer table.

The built-in effects rack includes EQ, filter, phaser, flanger, delay, distortion, and amp and speaker simulation, plus a convolution reverb with 119 impulses covering cathedrals, churches, rooms, halls, and special effects. An arpeggiator with a velocity sequencer table, swing, randomization, and duration control rounds out the performance tools.

Questions, answered

What do I need to use Cruiser?

Cruiser requires the full version of Native Instruments Kontakt 5.5.2 or later. It will not run in full within the free Kontakt Player, which only offers a demo mode.

Which operating systems does Cruiser support?

Cruiser runs on Windows 7 or higher and Mac OS X 10.9 or higher.

Are the samples usable outside Kontakt?

Yes. The sample directories are unlocked as 24-bit/48kHz stereo uncompressed WAV files, so they can be imported into other WAV-compatible software, samplers, and DAWs.

What are the system requirements?

The developer lists a dual-core CPU and 2 GB of system RAM, with an SATA or SSD drive recommended. The library takes up 2.1 GB installed.
