01Overview

Cassette Piano.02 Logic is part of the Cassette Piano series from THEPHONOLOOP. Its samples were recorded on an imperfect upright piano, with microphones placed at the back of the instrument, and the developer describes the result as organic with many small imperfections. The instrument offers stereo and mono versions, four processing decks with different levels of pitch instability, and a set of controls for noise, sample start, octave and tone. It suits producers who want a vintage, lo-fi piano sound inside a Logic workflow.

Best for

Sound Character and Recording Decks

The core of Cassette Piano.02 Logic is a new set of upright piano samples, recorded in both stereo and mono. The samples were processed through four decks. Deck A is recorded in stereo and mono with very low pitch instability. Deck B has a slightly loose drive belt that introduces noticeable pitch wobble, which the developer notes sounds great when transposed down. Deck C is the noisiest, with a medium amount of pitch instability. Deck D is similar to Deck A but with more instability in pitch and overall sound.

Each note was denoised with a high quality algorithm to prevent noise from stacking when several notes are played, while some residual noise is kept to avoid denoising artifacts. Noise can be added separately with the noise knob, so a five-voice chord carries one noise sample rather than five stacked copies.

Playing Controls and Workflow

Sample start controls the initial transients and can be operated from the GUI or the Mod Wheel, which helps shape the attack while designing a sound. An octave down switch lets you push the instrument lower for extra lo-fi character. A simple two-band equaliser called Instrument Tone sits at the bottom of the interface.

The instrument also includes simulated round robin, which the developer says makes faster note passages sound more realistic and adds nonlinearity to the overall sound.
