THEPHONOLOOP describes the instrument as a mix of physical modelling and FM synths recorded on a cassette with an old, worn recorder. Each note has been de-noised with a high-quality algorithm, so playing several notes at once does not stack the noise.

Noise is added separately with a noise slider. This lets you set the noise level independently and apply parameters such as filtering to it. In a five-note chord, you hear one noise sample rather than five layered on top of each other, which the developer says makes the sound more realistic.

The instrument has four velocity layers, which shape how the sound responds to playing dynamics. The editable Sample Start parameter is mapped to CC1 (Mod Wheel), so you can control the start point of playback from your keyboard or controller.

A REV mode plays the samples in reverse for alternative textures. The developer also notes a simulated round robin, which helps repeated notes sound less mechanical when played in fast ostinatos. Five presets are included as starting points.

Cassette Keys.01 suits producers who want vintage, tape-colored keys and quick sound design without a complicated interface. Because the controls are on a single page, it is easy to sketch ideas and adjust the sound during a session.
