01Overview

Cassette Mallets.01 is a collection of three bell and mallet instruments, each built from samples recorded on a cassette machine. THEPHONOLOOP describes the sounds as a mix of physical modeling and FM synthesis, covering a range of E2 to E6 across three velocity layers. The library is designed for Logic and offers a single-page interface with editable sample start, an octave-down switch and reverse modes for sound design.

Sound Character and Sample Design

The instruments are built from 442 samples in total, with 147 per instrument plus one shared noise sample. THEPHONOLOOP says every note was denoised with a high-quality algorithm to prevent noise from stacking when several notes sound together. A separate noise slider adds noise back in, so its level can be adjusted independently and filtered. Because only one noise sample is heard across a chord, a five-voice chord does not stack five copies of the noise.

The developer notes that these kinds of sounds work well when transposed down, which is why an octave-down switch is included.

Controls, Workflow and Round-Robin Playback

The interface is laid out on one page, with controls for sample start that can be adjusted from the GUI or the mod wheel. Sample start lets you remove the initial transient while shaping a sound. A simulated round-robin is included to make repeated notes sound more natural when playing ostinato patterns, even at fast tempos.

REV reverse mode and mono mode add further options for shaping the playing character of each instrument.
