01Overview

Cassette Mallets.02 is a successor to Cassette Mallets.01 and focuses on experimental mallet sounds. The library contains three instruments, each covering a different sound territory, from plates on a thin steel sheet to a two-octave xylophone blended with corrugated sheet resonances. Each instrument is made from layered samples recorded on three different cassette decks, which gives the sounds an organic character with many small imperfections.

Sound Character and Instrument Design

The three instruments take different approaches to mallet sounds. Sound 01 mixes old glockenspiel plates recorded on a thin steel plate. Sound 02 is a two-octave xylophone combined with corrugated sheet resonances. Sound 03 uses the same xylophone, recorded with three mallets attached to an old bed mattress spring and a copper wire to produce a random, granular pattern.

All three sounds are enhanced with additional synthesis techniques, which add body and extend their range across the keyboard. Sound 01 and Sound 02 each have five dynamic layers, while Sound 03 has four.

Noise Control and Preset Options

Every note has been denoised with a high-quality algorithm to prevent noise from stacking when several notes play together. Some residual noise remains to avoid denoising artefacts. A separate noise knob lets you add cassette noise back in, and it can be adjusted independently and filtered. Because the noise is applied once rather than per voice, a five-voice chord gets a single noise layer instead of five stacked ones.

The library includes 45 basic presets: a normal setting and reverse settings at 100%, 75%, 50% and 25% for each deck.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What do I need to run Cassette Mallets.02?

The full version of Logic Pro X is required. The developer notes it has not been tested in Logic Pro 9.

What is included in the library?

The library contains three instruments, 2565 uncompressed 24-bit WAV samples, three two-minute noise samples per deck, and 45 basic presets.

How is the noise handled?

Samples are denoised to avoid noise stacking across multiple notes. A noise knob lets you add and filter cassette noise separately, so a chord gets one noise layer rather than one per voice.
