Sound and Recording Approach
THEPHONOLOOP recorded the vibraphone across the full three-octave range using four different cassette decks. Each note in every dynamic layer was captured four times, so repeated notes vary from hit to hit instead of sounding identical.
The samples were denoised with a high quality algorithm to prevent noise from stacking when several notes sound together. A small amount of noise remains in the recordings to avoid denoising artifacts. A separate noise knob lets you add tape hiss back in and set its level independently, with filtering applied to it, so a five-note chord carries one noise layer rather than five stacked copies.
