Sound, Recording Method and Noise Control
The vibraphone was recorded across the full three-octave range with four dynamic layers. Each note was captured four times on four different cassette decks, giving the set 2,372 samples in total. THEPHONOLOOP says every note was carefully denoised with a high quality algorithm to prevent noise from stacking when several notes sound together.
Some noise remains in the samples to avoid denoising artifacts. A noise knob lets you add cassette noise back in and adjust its level separately from the instrument, and you can apply filtering to it. Because only one noise sample sounds across a chord, a five-voice chord does not build up five stacked noise layers.
