Sound and Character: Symmetrical vs Asymmetrical Waveshaping
The mode switch sets how the two shaping functions act on the signal. In symmetrical mode, both functions are applied to the whole signal, and the Bias control sets the mix between them. Symmetrical shaping generates odd harmonics.
In asymmetrical mode, the first function is applied to the positive part of the signal and the second to the negative part. Bias then sets an offset between the two halves. Asymmetrical shaping generates even harmonics, which is useful when you want a warmer, more uneven drive.
Because you can combine and adjust the six functions, the character can move a long way from one setting to another.
