01Overview

Devastor 2 is the second generation of D16 Group's distortion unit from the SilverLine Collection. It is an enhanced take on the distortion unit found in Phoscyon, with full control over multiband processing. The plugin combines a one-knob input flattener, a diode-clipper and three filter sections, and it offers a choice of connection topologies that determine how the filters and clipper interact. A tag-based preset browser and MIDI learn are included.

Sound Design Structure and Routing

Devastor 2 is built from four blocks: a dynamics flattener controlled by a single knob, a diode-clipper distortion, three multi-mode filter sections and an optional output limiter.

The plugin offers nine connection topologies between its filters and the diode-clipper. Filters can process the signal before or after the clipper, and some configurations let the filters work alongside the clipper. This widens the range of sounds you can shape.

The filters are modeled on analogue synthesizer designs, with low pass, high pass, bandpass and band reject modes and adjustable resonance and cutoff. D16 Group says they are not the peaking EQ type common in classic multiband distortion units.

Clean-Up, Output Quality and Use Cases

D16 Group says Devastor 2 applies anti-aliasing techniques to its output to reduce the cold, harsh character that digital distortion can have. The developer describes the output as warm and musical.

The plugin can be used on synth lines, guitar, drums and other sources. Lower preamp gain, a higher threshold and a soft knee on the dynamics section can add warmth and detail to a sound without adding distortion.

Devastor 2 includes a tag-based preset browser and two alternative GUI sizes. A demo version is available if you want to test it before deciding.
