01Overview

VocalSynth 2 Educational Version gathers several vocal tools in one plugin: a Vocoder, Talkbox, Polyvox and Compuvox, plus Biovox, a newer effect built on a model of the human vocal tract. The plugin is aimed at producers who want to shape vocals with textural, synthesized or experimental treatments rather than only corrective processing. It is sold as an educational version of iZotope's VocalSynth 2 and is available in 64-bit builds for Windows 10–11 and macOS Big Sur through Ventura.

03In depth

Biovox and vocal character

Biovox uses a scientific model of the human vocal tract. You can adjust nasality, vowel shapes and formants, which the developer presents as a way to get a smooth, textural treatment on any audio signal, not only voices.

The effect can be used subtly to adapt a take to a mix, or pushed further as a creative effect to make a vocal more breathy or present.

Effects chain and ways to play

VocalSynth 2 includes seven effects that can be dragged into any order: Shred with sequencer, Distort, Filter, Transform, Delay, and the newer Chorus and Ring Mod. Chorus and Ring Mod are described as pedal-style effects, and Ring Mod includes a tremolo effect.

The plugin offers three modes. Auto Mode works with real-time pitch correction and harmony generation, MIDI Mode lets you play pitch from a keyboard, and Sidechain Mode uses an external audio signal as the carrier in place of the built-in synth.

Who it suits

The plugin fits producers who work on vocal sound design, harmony building or effects-heavy vocal production. Its inter-plugin links with Neutron 2, including the Visual Mixer and Masking Meter, and with Tonal Balance Control make it easier to use alongside other iZotope tools.
