01Overview

Tonex ODS Legends is built around four Overdrive Special amplifiers captured through IK's AI Machine Modeling technology. Each amp was recorded in a Nashville studio, with settings dialed in by tone experts across clean and overdriven sweet spots. The collection also includes two overdrive pedals, a Klon Centaur and an early '80s Tube Screamer, that IK says pair well with these amps. The models run in the TONEX ecosystem on Mac and PC.

Sound and Character of the Overdrive Special Models

IK describes the Overdrive Special as a hand-wired amplifier built in very limited numbers, known for harmonic richness in its overdrive channel and transparency in its clean channel. Each of the four amps in this collection is captured with several settings, so the models differ from one another.

The 1979 Overdrive Special is described as a little brighter, with a more articulate midrange and tighter low end. The 1983 model is described as harmonically rich with slightly higher mids, while the 1984 combo is described as smooth and velvety with a touch of low-mid punch. The 2004 combo is described as more mid-scooped, with a more defined low end.

The collection covers clean, overdrive and boosted settings across its 20 Tone Models.

Workflow and Recording Setup Details

Each amp was captured with a specific microphone setup. The 1979 model uses a Sennheiser 409, an Audio-Technica 4081 and a Shure SM57 Unidyne. The 1983 model uses a Shure SM57, an RCA BK-5 and a Lewitt LCT1040, with Neve 1081 and AEA TRP outboard preamps. The 1984 and 2004 models use a Shure SM57, a Royer 121 and a Sennheiser 441.

IK notes that the Tone Models can be layered in AmpliTube to build custom combinations. The collection works across TONEX on Mac and PC, the TONEX Pedal and iOS, and is compatible with the free TONEX CS and TONEX App.
