01Overview

MODO BASS 2 is the expanded edition of IK Multimedia's physically modeled bass instrument. The developer says it adds 8 new basses, including fretless and upright options, a redesigned Patterns section with new grooves, and more performance controls. Instead of playing back recorded samples, MODO BASS 2 models the string, the player's touch, the fretboard, the pickups and the amp and effects chain to generate sound in real time. It is built for producers who need a convincing bassline inside a plugin workflow.

Sound Generation and Bass Models

MODO BASS 2 creates its sound through modal synthesis. The developer describes the engine as modeling how each string responds to the player, and how the string interacts with the fretboard, body and pickups of the bass. An analog-style amp and effects chain is added to the signal path.

The library includes 22 bass models, among them 2 fretless basses and 2 double-bass instruments. Any standard bass can also be turned into a fretless model using the instrument's controls. Because the engine does not rely on samples, the developer notes that the plugin uses little storage space.

Playing Style, Strings and Electronics

The Play Style section offers finger, slap, pick and mute articulations, with pick thickness and downstroke or alternating picking settings. You can also move the playing hand to change where the strings are played.

String settings cover string count (4, 5 or 6), gauge, scale length, action, string age and construction. The Electronics section provides 32 interchangeable pickup models that can be moved along the string, a switch between active and passive electronics with parametric EQ, and an under-bridge piezo pickup with blend.

The Patterns section includes filters for genre, song section, length and time signature to audition ready-made grooves. The effects and amp section adds 7 stomp box effects in a 4-slot chain and two amps, Solid State and Tube, derived from AmpliTube.
