01Overview

Things – Crusher is an effect plugin from AudioThing built around two tools: a bit crusher for lo-fi digitial distortion and a multimode filter for shaping the result. AudioThing describes it as an easy-to-use effect and says it is inspired by the effect section of its instrument plugin Noises. The plugin is offered as a 64-bit effect that runs in common DAWs on Windows and macOS, and a trial is available.

Bit crushing and harshness control

The bit crusher section offers controls for bit depth, downsampling and mix, so you can move from subtle grit to heavy digital degradation. A harshness control, which AudioThing takes from its Reels plugin, adds a further way to tune how aggressive the crushed signal sounds.

Because the crusher has its own mix control, you can blend the processed signal with the dry signal instead of replacing it entirely.

Multimode filter and output gain

The filter offers lowpass, highpass, bandpass and notch modes. You can choose a 2-pole or 4-pole slope, which changes how steeply the filter cuts. An output gain control sits after the filter so you can set the level of the processed sound.

Running the filter after the crusher, or the reverse, lets you shape the crushed tone and then reduce or emphasize particular frequency ranges.

Resizable interface

The plugin window is resizable, so you can enlarge the controls for easier editing on high-resolution screens or keep the window small in a cramped session layout.
