01Overview

The plugin is based on the TEAC 3340S, the second-generation Creator series 4-channel Simul-Sync tape deck. IK Multimedia says each machine was chosen with help from TASCAM and TEAC, fully restored, and then modeled through a process covering the magnetic tape-recording chain. The result is offered as a plugin that brings the character of this deck into a DAW, with the original tone-shaping controls and a set of presets for saving your own settings.

Tape formulas and signal path

The plugin includes four tape formulas: 911, modeled after the BASF SM911 and recommended by TASCAM for balancing warmth and precision on the A-3340S; 456, modeled after the Ampex 456 formula and described as warm and round with saturation that responds to recording level; GP9, modeled after the Quantegy GP9 and designed to accept higher signal levels with minimal distortion; and 499, modeled after the Ampex 499 and designed to handle high levels while adding high-frequency definition.

A signal path selector switches between Input, which bypasses the tape and passes audio only through the electronic stages, and Repro, which runs the signal through the full analog record and playback chain.

Tape speed, true stereo and controls

Tape speed is selectable between 7.5 and 15 or 15 and 30 inches per second, depending on the machine. Per the developer, the higher speed gives more fidelity and the lower speed a warmer, rounder tone.

The True Stereo option reproduces the small level, EQ and distortion differences between left and right channels found in analog machines. Disabling it gives identical left and right processing. Transport modeling recreates small irregularities in tape movement. Head calibration and presets are also included.
