01Overview

Tape Machine 99 models the Revox PR99 Mk II, a rack-mount stereo recorder that Studer produced under its Revox brand in the 1980s. The developer describes the machine's hybrid circuit design as producing a smooth, linear frequency response with very little of the bass boost typical of tape heads. The plugin combines dynamic convolution with physical modeling of the tape recording process, and it is aimed at producers who want analog tape character inside a digital session.

Best for

  • Mix bus tape saturation
  • Warm vocal and drum processing
  • Analog-style stereo glue
  • Dubbing vinyl-style recordings
  • Punchy modern analog sound

Tape formulations and sound character

The plugin offers four tape formulations modeled after classic stocks. The 250 formula is the most colored of the set, with warmth and more saturation. The 456 formula is described as the tape most associated with the classic tape sound, offering a round tone that responds strongly to recording level. The GP9 formula handles higher signal levels with minimal distortion and compression, giving a punchy result. The 499 formula also handles high levels cleanly and adds high-frequency definition, which suits recordings that need a more digital-like clarity while keeping an analog feel.

Tape speed is selectable between 15 and 30 inches per second. Faster speed gives more fidelity, while slower speed gives a warmer, rounder tone.

Signal path and shared controls

All plugins in the Tape Machine collection share the same control layout, which makes quick A-B comparisons between machines straightforward. The Input path passes audio only through the input and output electronics and skips the tape, which can sound very transparent or slightly colored depending on the recorder. The Repro path routes the signal through the full analog chain, including the recording head, tape and playback head.

True Stereo reproduces small level, EQ and distortion differences between channels, and it can be disabled for identical left and right processing. Transport Modeling simulates small irregularities in tape movement, which affect the two channels differently. It can be switched off when a perfectly steady result is needed.

Questions, answered

What is Tape Machine 99 based on?

Tape Machine 99 re-creates the Revox PR99 Mk II, a compact rack-mount stereo tape recorder produced by Studer under its Revox brand in the 1980s. IK Multimedia developed it as part of the T-RackS Tape Machine collection.

What formats does Tape Machine 99 support?

Tape Machine 99 is available in VST3, VST2, AU and AAX formats. It runs on Windows and macOS.

What do I need to run Tape Machine 99?

On macOS you need an Apple M1 or Intel Core i5 processor, 8 GB of RAM and macOS 10.15 or newer, with macOS 11 or newer required for Apple Silicon. On Windows you need an Intel Core i5 or equivalent, 8 GB of RAM and Windows 10 (64-bit) or newer. Both platforms need 9 GB of hard drive space and an OpenGL 2 compatible graphics adapter, and an internet connection is required for Custom Shop operations.

Does Tape Machine 99 need an internet connection?
