01Overview

Tape Machine 440 is part of IK Multimedia's Tape Machine collection, built to recreate the sound of analog tape recording inside a DAW. It combines convolution and physical modeling to reproduce how the tape formula, the tape transport and the recording electronics interact. The developer describes it as a way to add warmth, body and glue to a mix. Four tape formulas, adjustable tape speed and record bias give you control over how much color the effect adds.

Best for

Tape formulas and sound character

Tape Machine 440 offers four tape formulas, each with a distinct tone. The 250 formula, modeled on the 3M/Scotch 250, is the most colored of the set, with warmth and more saturation than the others. The 456 formula, modeled on the Ampex 456, gives a warm, round tone that responds strongly to recording level. The GP9, modeled on the Quantegy GP9, accepts higher signal levels with minimal distortion and compression, and the 499, modeled on the Ampex 499, handles high levels cleanly while adding high-frequency definition.

Tape speed is selectable between 15 and 30 inches per second. The higher speed gives more fidelity, while the lower speed produces a warmer, rounder result.

Controls and signal path

The plugin's controls focus on signal path and mechanical behavior. The Input path passes audio only through the input and output electronics and bypasses the tape, while the Repro path runs the signal through the full recording and playback chain, including the tape and both heads.

True Stereo reproduces the small level, EQ and distortion differences between left and right channels found in real machines. Transport Modeling simulates small irregularities in tape movement, which affect the two channels differently. Both can be disabled if you need perfectly identical channel processing or a steady transport. Record Bias can be pushed higher for a warm, gently saturated sound, or lowered to boost highs and add nonlinear distortion.

Questions, answered

What formats is Tape Machine 440 available in?

Tape Machine 440 is available in VST3, VST2, AU and AAX formats. It runs on Windows and macOS and is a 64-bit plugin.

What do I need to run Tape Machine 440?

On macOS you need 64-bit macOS 10.15 or newer, with macOS 11 or newer required for Apple Silicon, 8 GB of RAM and 9 GB of hard drive space. On Windows you need Windows 10 (64-bit) or newer, 8 GB of RAM, 9 GB of hard drive space and an ASIO-compatible sound card. Both platforms require an OpenGL 2 compatible graphics adapter and an internet connection for Custom Shop operations.

Which tape formula should I start with?

The 250 formula is the most colored and saturated of the four, while the 456 gives a warm, round tone. The GP9 suits punchy, high-level recordings, and the 499 adds high-frequency definition while staying analog in character.
