01Overview

Tape Suite is built around a fully parametric physical model of magnetic tape and tape transport. Its four plugins share one core, so you can move between reel-to-reel style warmth and worn cassette-style behavior within the same session. The modulation section covers wow and flutter, the compander recreates tape noise reduction, and the playback filtering section shapes the head response. Each plugin adds its own design on top of this shared foundation, from a through-zero flanger to a multi-head tape delay.

Best for

  • Tape delay effects
  • Analog flanging

Four Tape Effects on a Shared Physical Model

Tape Suite groups its tools into four plugins: Delay, Flanger, Chorus and Color. Each one is built on the same core simulation, which is organized into four sections: Tape Simulation, Compander, Playback Filtering and Modulation.

The Delay plugin uses four heads, each with its own pan position, and can sync to host tempo with snap-to-grid in eighths or triplets. A ping-pong mode and selectable feedback from any playback head add more routing options.

The Flanger offers through-zero flanging with manual or LFO control, and the LFO can sync to the host. The Chorus provides up to eight voices with adjustable stereo spread. Color adds a texture processor and convolver using impulse responses from several vintage devices.

Modulation, Compander and Playback Controls

The modulation section changes tape playback speed, producing wow at low frequencies and flutter at mid frequencies. Random modulation and unsynced channels can create an instant stereo effect. Because modulation is applied to the tape transport rather than the delayed signal, UVI says the detune sounds natural.

The compander includes three models of the noise reduction encode and decode stages used in tape machines. Encode and decode can be decoupled and mixed for creative results. Playback filtering lets you adjust speed, head distance to tape, head angle and width to change the simulation's character.

Tape Suite also includes compensated drive, feedback compensation, a low-latency mode and effect visualizations.
