01Overview

Rust 4 is the largest volume in Soundiron's Rust series of metallic percussive and melodic instruments. The sounds were recorded at the East Contra Costa Historical Society's agricultural museum, drawing on vintage plows, harvesters, tractors, a railroad caboose, a 40-foot windmill and pioneer-era household objects made from brass, copper, steel, tin, bronze and iron. The sounds are organized into playable percussion kits and effect banks for film, game and experimental production.

Sound Sources and Character

The library is built from field recordings of found objects rather than synthesized tones. Soundiron recorded ball, stick, felt and metal mallet percussion across the museum grounds, capturing booms, screeches, clanks, ratchets, gongs and ringing tones in indoor and outdoor spaces. Sounds are grouped by object, style, tone and sonic character, and range from delicate to raw and gritty.

The library includes 30 ambient pads and evolving drones created from the same source material, along with tonal sound effects that can be played as melodic tuned percussion.

Kontakt Controls and Effects

Rust 4 runs in a multi-layer Kontakt interface with an LFO, filters with selectable modulation targets, glide and an arpeggiator with velocity table, direction, swing and randomization controls. A key and scale lock helps keep melodic playing within common scales.

The modular FX rack offers 27 DSP effect modules across eight slots, which can be placed in any order. The convolution reverb includes custom rooms, halls, chambers and FX environments, and the library ships with 21 Kontakt .nki instrument presets and a set of FX rack chain presets to start from.
