01Overview

Recurse is a delay-category effects plugin from Lese that feeds incoming audio back through an internal delay buffer, so effects are applied again and again as time passes. Two Loop effects set where the signal enters the buffer and where the buffer is mixed back into the audio. The developer positions it for experimental and sound art work, with a focus on degradation and controlled feedback. It is available in VST3, AU and AAX formats for Windows and macOS, and a trial is offered.

Recursive Processing and Degradation Character

At the core of Recurse is a reorderable multi-effect chain. The two Loop effects decide the point at which the input enters the internal delay buffer and the point at which that buffer is mixed back into the signal. This structure is what makes the processing recursive.

The Degradation unit combines several smaller effects to simulate wear from physical media. Lese lists tape wow and flutter, vinyl aging, transparent coloration and a light layer of dust. Lese says the plugin was inspired by ambient and experimental artists such as The Caretaker, Tim Hecker and William Basinski.

Feedback Handling and Dust Algorithms

Recurse includes processing designed to prevent sudden, loud feedback bursts, which is a common risk when a delay signal is routed back into itself. The effects units are also built to respond to loud input in a way that mimics older gear, so pushing the incoming level changes the colour of the sound.

The developer says the algorithms are new rather than adapted from existing designs. Its vinyl dust effect uses close to 100 real dust crackle samples, cleaned up and mixed back in real time to produce a continuous crackle.
