01Overview

Quanta 2 is Audio Damage's second-generation synth built around granular synthesis. Its grain engine can process loaded samples or the internal oscillators and noise source, with control over grain rate, pitch, direction, length, panning and level. The synth adds two virtual analog oscillators, dual multi-mode filters and a modulation system that includes four flexible envelopes, two bipolar LFOs and a sample and hold source. A trial is available.

Granular Synthesis and Sound Design Tools

The grain engine runs up to 100 simultaneous grains per voice, each up to one second long. You control grain rate, pitch, direction, shape, length, panning, source position and level, which makes it suited to textural pads, time-stretched sounds and rhythmic glitch effects.

The two virtual analog oscillators offer continuously variable wave shape with pulse width modulation. Each oscillator can be sent straight into the grain engine, so you can granularize one oscillator and keep the other as a plain tone, for example a sub bass. The noise source includes a color control that shapes its tonal character and can also feed the grain engine.

The two filters run in serial or parallel mode and offer lowpass, highpass, bandpass and notch responses in 2-pole and 4-pole configurations.

Sample Loading, Modulation and Tuning

The multi-format sample loader accepts AIFF, WAV, Broadcast WAV, FLAC, MP3 and Ogg at any sample rate, bit depth and channel configuration. Samples are converted to the session sample rate, and the synth attempts to detect the root note. Detection works best on single legato notes rather than chords or full loops, and you can adjust the root note afterward.

Modulation is handled through a right-click menu that assigns any modulation or MIDI source to any destination. Each of the four flexible envelopes is an arbitrary function generator with up to 99 steps, and the two bipolar LFOs offer host tempo sync and retrigger.

For tuning, Quanta 2 supports ODDSound's MTS-ESP and the open-source TUN file format, along with a global tuning offset with A=440 as the default. It also understands MPE, so controllers such as the Linnstrument, Roli Seaboard and Haken Continuum can send per-note pressure, pitch bend and modulation.

Questions, answered

What formats does Quanta 2 support?

Quanta 2 is available in VST3, AU and AAX formats.

Which operating systems can run Quanta 2?

Quanta 2 runs on Windows and macOS. The listed requirements are macOS 10.12 or newer (64-bit) and Windows 8.1 or newer (64-bit).

Can Quanta 2 load my own samples?
