01Overview

OP-Xa V is Arturia's software version of the OB-Xa, a 1980s analog polysynth known for its thick, aggressive tones. The developer describes it as faithful to the original sound while adding new features. Its core is a dual-oscillator architecture with cross-modulation, a filter section that mixes the oscillators, and stereo spread on oscillator, filter and LFO parameters. An arpeggiator, four Function Generators and a modulation matrix extend the sound design options beyond the hardware.

Sound Design Features in OP-Xa V

The oscillators support continuous cross-modulation, so one oscillator can modulate the other. The developer notes that this produces frequency modulation with a metallic character, paralleling the 0 to 1 switch on the original OB-X hardware.

The filter section includes a mix of oscillators 1, 2 and noise, which lets you shape the balance of sound sources before filtering. Individual voice panning and innovative voice detuning add movement across the polyphony.

Stereo spread uses left and right offsets on oscillator, filter and LFO parameters, giving the sound width and motion.

Workflow, Modulation and Effects

The modulation matrix and four Function Generators let you route modulation sources to parameters. The LFO offers more flexibility for easy modulation.

The arpeggiator generates patterns and melodies that can drive rhythmic parts. The extension panel holds the Mod Matrix, the four Function Generators and three busses with nine effects each.

On-board effects include delay, chorus, reverb, phaser, flanger, compressor, overdrive, multimode filter and bitcrusher. A visual browser makes preset selection quick across the more than 400 included presets.
