01Overview

Arturia's DX7 V models the frequency modulation synth that defined many 1980s keyboard sounds. Beyond the original DX7 parameters, it adds new operator waveforms, filters and feedback loops on each operator, extra modulation sources and an arpeggiator. A redesigned interface keeps everyday performance controls visible while tabbed windows expose deeper programming, and a preset browser with tags and playlists helps you manage a large sound library.

FM sound character and original DX7 compatibility

DX7 V reproduces the FM digital technology behind the original instrument, including all of its original parameters and support for importing original DX7 SysEx data. The original 32 algorithms are included. Frequency modulation works by modulating one waveform with another, which produces harmonic profiles more complex than analog synthesis. Arturia says the sounds range from acoustic and organic to synthetic and mechanical.

The plugin comes with a preset library of classic FM sounds such as electric pianos, basses, marimbas and synths, along with new sounds from Arturia's sound design team. You can play these presets without prior FM programming knowledge.

Operators, modulation and effects

Each of the six operators offers 25 waveforms, a multi-mode filter and a feedback loop. Envelope options include DX7, DADSR and multi-segment types that can be synced and looped. Two modulation envelopes, four assignable macros and an advanced modulation matrix give you control over how parameters move.

The synth also includes a step sequencer, two LFOs with six waveforms, an arpeggiator and four effect slots that can be routed in parallel or in series. An oscilloscope is included for viewing the output. The interface is resizable to suit high-resolution and Retina displays.

05FAQ

Questions, answered

What formats does DX7 V support?

DX7 V is available in VST2, AU, AAX and Standalone formats for Windows and macOS.

Can I import my original DX7 patches?

Yes. DX7 V supports original DX7 SysEx import, so you can bring in existing DX7 data.

What do I need to run DX7 V?

It runs in Standalone, VST, AAX, Audio Unit and NKS hosts, with 64-bit DAWs only for NKS. On macOS it requires 10.13 or later, 4 GB RAM, a 4-core CPU at 3.4 GHz or an Apple Silicon CPU, 3 GB of free disk space and an OpenGL 2.0 compatible GPU. On Windows it requires Windows 10 64-bit or later with similar specs; ARM processors are not supported on Windows.

Do I need to know FM synthesis to use it?

No. The included preset library lets you play classic and new FM sounds without programming them yourself, and the interface shows everyday controls first.
