01Overview

This upgrade takes existing NR800 v6 owners to version 7 of McDSP's real-time noise reduction plugin. The processor works with no internal latency and uses eight bands of focusable noise reduction, so you can target noise across the whole spectrum or in a narrow range. Version 7 adds optimization for Apple Silicon and recent Intel processors, double precision processing and updated interfaces. McDSP describes the NR800's engineering as award-winning.

Noise reduction approach and sound

McDSP says the NR800 operates with no internal latency and avoids the artifacts it associates with transform-based noise reduction plugins. Most of its processing is broadband, but noise reduction focus points let you concentrate the effect in a narrow part of the frequency spectrum.

The input HPF and LPF filters can be set with slopes up to 36 dB/Oct at frequencies independent of the focus points. Noise reduction modes range from smooth to aggressive, and the x2 mode doubles the reduction in all bands for severe noise problems.

Controls and workflow

Each of the eight bands has a noise reduction amount fader and a noise detection threshold marker. Master (M) and linked (L) buttons handle linking across bands, and each band can be bypassed or soloed to audition the noise it removes.

The Range control scales overall reduction from 100% down to off, and Response sets how quickly the processing recovers from a noise event. Snap Gain and Snap Threshold fit the gain and thresholds to the input signal, with an NR Bias selector choosing which reduction amounts are active when you snap.

Questions, answered

Is the NR800 v7 upgrade for existing v6 owners only?

Yes. This listing is an upgrade product for owners of NR800 v6. Buyers who do not own v6 need the full version instead.

What formats and operating systems does the NR800 support?

The plugin is listed in VST3, VST2, AU and AAX formats for Windows and macOS. Version 7 no longer supports VST, so VST versions of v6 will no longer be updated.

What do I need to activate the NR800?

McDSP plugins require an iLok2 or iLok3 USB Smart Key, or a free iLok License Manager account with an iLok Cloud session. Each v7 plugin includes two activations per authorization.

Does the NR800 add latency?

McDSP states that the NR800 operates with no internal latency, making it suitable for real-time use.
