01Overview

The NR800 Noise Reduction Processor HD v7 is designed to reduce unwanted noise in recordings while working in real time. The developer describes it as operating without internal latency and without the artefacts that can come from transform-based denoisers. It is built for music production, post-production and live sound. The HD version targets AAX DSP systems, and a Native version is also available.

Noise Reduction Control and Sound Character

The NR800 processes mostly broadband noise, but its eight bands can each be focused on a narrow part of the spectrum. Each band has its own noise reduction fader and detection threshold marker, so you can treat specific noise problems rather than the whole signal.

Input filters with slopes up to 36 dB/Oct let you shape what the detector listens to, and they can be set independently of the focus points. Several noise reduction modes range from smooth to aggressive, a Range control scales the overall effect from 100% down to off, and an x2 mode doubles the reduction in all bands for severe noise.

Workflow, Setup and Monitoring

Snap Gain and Snap Threshold help you set the processor quickly by fitting the gain and thresholds to the input signal. An NR Bias selector determines which reduction amounts are activated when snapping. Response time controls how fast the reduction recovers after a noise event.

Master (M) and linked (L) buttons follow the usual McDSP linking approach, and each band can be bypassed or soloed so you can audition the noise being removed.

Questions, answered

What formats does the NR800 support?

The NR800 HD v7 is available in VST3, VST2, AU and AAX formats. VST is no longer supported as of v7.0, so the VST2 version is listed by the developer but the v7 support note indicates VST is no longer supported.

Which operating systems are supported?

The plugin runs on Windows and macOS. On Mac, macOS 10.13 or higher is required, and the developer lists support up to macOS 12 Monterey. On Windows, Windows 7, 8 and 10 (64-bit only) are listed.

What do I need to use NR800 HD v7?

A host that supports the plugin formats, such as Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Cubase, Nuendo, Ableton Live, LUNA, Reaper, Sonar or Studio One.
