Oscillator, Filter and Sound Character
At the heart of JULY is one DCO oscillator offering PWM, saw and square waveforms, with a suboscillator that can sit up to three octaves below the main pitch. The voice runs through a high-pass filter and a resonant low-pass filter. AudioThing says the low-pass filter is based on the IR3109 VCF chip, a 24 dB design. Lower resonance settings give a smooth, warm tone, while higher resonance adds a sharper, more aggressive edge.
Brightness and contrast controls let you shape the overall tonal balance without rebuilding your patch. Two envelopes and a single LFO with multiple trigger modes handle modulation, and mono, poly and unison modes cover everything from leads to wide pads.
The chorus is a central part of the instrument's identity. JULY models a BBD-based stereo chorus with its surrounding filters and LFOs, offering modes I, II and I+II, plus a rate multiplier and a switch to the J6 values.
