01Overview

Rumba Boxes comes from Soundiron's Hopkin Instrumentarium series, built around instruments designed by Bart Hopkin. The library centers on two large wooden bass kalimbas, a rumba box and the Arby McCone, which combines a rumba box with cajón-style body and added percussion. Soundiron sampled them with two stereo microphone positions and includes 20 sound-designed FX and ambient presets alongside four master presets.

Sound Sources and Playing Styles

The library covers two instruments. Rumba Box is a bass kalimba with tines that are plucked, typically by a player seated on the box. Arby McCone adds a cajón-like wooden body and extra percussion, including metallic spring sounds, clave sounds, shekere-style beads, shakers, rattletines and bells.

The samples include plucks, picks, mallets, percussive taps, knocks, slaps and a range of auxiliary percussion. Sympathetic resonance in the tines is part of the character, and Hopkin's rattles add a distinctive edge to the tone.

Kontakt Controls and Effects

The Kontakt interface offers automation-ready controls for swell, attack, release, offset, vibrato, filter, coarse and fine pitch, articulation switching, cross-fading and layering. An adaptable LFO system, 12 filters and an arpeggiator with velocity table, swing and randomization are included, along with a key and scale lock for constraining notes to common scales.

A modular FX rack provides 18 DSP modules across 10 slots, including phaser, flanger, delay, distortion, amp and cab simulators, compressors and EQ. The reverb section includes 99 convolution impulse responses for rooms, halls, chambers and outdoor spaces, plus 40 custom FX impulses.
