01Overview

Hopkin Instrumentarium: 2+2+1 is built around a custom 14-string zither. Each string is divided into three segments by multiple bridges, so one pluck excites sympathetic vibrations across the whole instrument. Soundiron sampled the instrument in two mic positions, Close and Pickups, and paired open-string sounds with damped plucks. The library also includes ambient pads and evolving drones made from the same source recordings.

Zither Sound and Articulations

The library captures two playing styles for each note. The open-string sample keeps the natural sympathetic resonance of the instrument. The damped sample uses a foam pad placed under the strings near the bridge, which produces a percussive attack and a quick decay that still carries a warm reverb tail from the undamped segments.

Upper and lower plucks, open or damped, and harmonic or atonal glisses are available across four layers, so you can combine them in the Kontakt interface. The developer says the zither's unison and octave relationships create shared resonances and subtle chorusing from natural tuning variations.

Controls and Kontakt Workflow

The Kontakt interface offers controls for swell, attack, release, offset, vibrato, filter, coarse and fine pitch, articulation switching, cross-fading and layering. These parameters are automation-ready, so you can shape the zither over time within your session.

The library ships with 21 .nki presets and 5,544 stereo WAV samples, which gives you the raw material to build your own patches.
