01Overview

Halogen FM is designed to make FM synthesis approachable. Instead of working through complex algorithms, you start with the global Spark button, which generates a new patch instantly. From there, a set of macro knobs for Timbre, two envelope generators, Modulation and FX lets you move a sound from soft and smooth to bold and percussive. Full operator access is available when you want more detailed control.

Sound Design With the Halogen Spark Core

The Halogen Spark core is the starting point for most sounds in Halogen FM. Pressing the global Spark button produces a new patch, and each parameter can be randomised globally or individually, which makes it easy to generate variations you would not have programmed by hand.

The Timbre knob moves the tone from softer to bolder and more aggressive. The Modulation knob adds dynamic movement to the right and a more refined tone to the left. Turning the envelope controls to the right gives smooth pads, while turning them to the left produces more percussive, plucking sounds.

The developer describes the synth as inspired by a lesser-known branch of Japanese FM synthesis, and the two operators are built with identical features, so both can be shaped in the same way.

Workflow, Controls and Performance Options

Halogen FM offers two modes, Mono and Polyphonic, so it can be used for basses and leads as well as chords and pads. The interface is fully scalable, and the advanced preset browser helps you audition the included library of over 320 presets.

For performance and automation, the plugin includes custom reverb and full CC MIDI mapping. It also supports poly-aftertouch and poly-pitchbend, which gives expressive control when played from a compatible MIDI keyboard or controller.

The macro layout keeps everyday tweaking fast, while full operator access is there when you want to edit the underlying FM structure.
