Novation Bass Station is a software synth developed by GForce Software in collaboration with Novation. It recreates the sound of the 1993 hardware original, known for its punchy, analogue bass tone. GForce has extended the design with up to 16 voices, unison modes, a sequencer and a modulation system called X-Modifiers. The plugin ships with over 300 presets and a preset browser for organizing sounds.

Sound Character and Filter

The synth is an emulation of the original Novation Bass Station, which was monophonic. This version adds polyphony and unison modes, so it can play chords and thick layered leads as well as bass lines.

The filter is the core of the sound. You can choose a 2-pole or 4-pole filter, and the developer describes the resonance as screeching. Pan Spread, a high-pass filter, distortion, chorus, delay and reverb give further control over tone and space in the mix.

Workflow, Modulation and Sequencing

X-Modifiers allow direct modulation of most parameters without manually building modulation paths. A scope shows the sum of the modulation, which helps when shaping movement.

The built-in arpeggiator and sequencer include step length, velocity, slide, swing, accent, probability and two Macro tracks. Two programmable Macros let you control several parameters at once, and the interface is fully scalable.
