01Overview

GForce Software describes OB-E as an authentic emulation of the Oberheim 8-Voice with its own additions. Each of the eight voices is modeled as an individual SEM module, so the polyphony is built from eight slightly different synth voices. Control is handled in software, with Mono, Mono Legato, Poly, Unison and Split keyboard modes. The plugin includes Drum Mode, a librarian for browsing patches and a sequencer with zoom.

Sound Character and Oberheim 8-Voice Architecture

The original 8-Voice is built around a single SEM containing two VCOs with pulse and sawtooth waveforms, two ADS envelope generators, an LFO and a multi-mode filter. Each SEM is monophonic on its own, and eight of them triggered by a polyphonic keyboard create an eight-note polyphonic synth.

GForce says OB-E takes this Octaphonic architecture further. The developer notes that small inaccuracies in each of the eight voices are part of the sound, and OB-E adds a Vintage control and a refined Detune parameter to dial in those imperfections. The third VCO doubles as an audio-rate LFO for each SEM. OB-E also includes zero delay feedback filters.

Workflow, Sequencer and Patch Library

OB-E gives access to the voices through group editing, the ZOOM view that shows individual SEM front and rear panels side by side, and copy, paste and save for each SEM. Continuous round-robin mode assigns a new voice to each note.

The built-in 8-step sequencer is modeled on the MS-1 and adds features beyond the original hardware. In Split mode with the sequencer routed to SEM 8, you can build a three-part soundscape within one patch. The plugin also ships with a stereo delay, a reverb and a librarian with arrow-key navigation for the 700+ factory patches.
