01Overview

Esspresso is aimed at producers who need control over sibilance, the high-frequency hiss of S and T sounds that can distort a vocal or make a mix hard to balance. The developer positions it as a de-esser for everyone recording audio, not only for advanced engineers. A visual frequency response view shows the reduction in real time, and a solo switch lets you hear exactly what the detector is listening to. It is available as a VST2, AU and AAX plugin for Windows and macOS.

How Esspresso Separates Detection From Reduction

Many de-essers tie the frequency band they listen to directly to the band they compress. Klevgrand says Esspresso decouples the two. You can set the detector to monitor one part of the spectrum and apply gain reduction to another, which suits cases where the sibilant energy sits in a different place from the range you want to control.

The detector includes a sensitivity gain control and a solo switch for the detector signal, so you can audition the sounds that trigger reduction before adjusting the suppressor. Visual reduction and detector RMS meters show the activity of each stage.

Suppressor Modes and Workflow

The suppressor offers three filter modes: all, band and high. These let you shape how the reduction is applied across the spectrum, from broad control to a focused treatment of the highest frequencies. The interface is designed to be quick to read, which helps when you are working through a vocal track note by note.

Because the frequency response view updates as you adjust settings, you can judge the effect on the sibilant range directly instead of relying only on ear.
