01Overview

DelGrain is an effects plugin from Rob Papen in the delay category. It plays audio back in a granular way, so the sound is broken into small grains before or after the delay line. Tape delay sits alongside the granular engine, and a distortion module and analog-modeled filter section can be routed in several ways. The plugin is built for producers who want rhythmic, tempo-synced delays on drums and percussion, or more unusual textures on vocals and sound effects.

Granular and tape delay routing

DelGrain pairs a granular delay with a tape delay in one plugin. The granular stage can sit before the delay, inside it, after it, or in parallel, which gives six routing options through the Grain, Delay and Filter blocks.

Both delay lines run from 1.0ms to 4096ms and can lock to tempo from a 1/64 triple note up to a 1.1 dotted bar. The granular size control covers 1ms to 1024ms, also with tempo sync. The tape delay includes low-pass and high-pass filters, and an Equal Feedback option keeps the left and right tails even, while Cross Feedback offers a different stereo character.

Disrupt Sphere and modulation

The Disrupt Sphere-Slider is the main creative control. It can be linked to several delay parameters so that one movement changes multiple settings at once. A Spring feature returns the slider to center in a tempo-based way, and Lazy Mode automates its movement in different directions for modulation-style effects.

An Audio Follower with a side-chain input can drive parameters, including the Disrupt Sphere itself. The MIDI and MOD 1 to 4 section adds further control over the same parameters.
