01Overview

Degrader is an effects plugin that combines a resampler with a bit crusher. Klevgrand positions it for simulating the sound of vintage digital equipment, for lo-fi processing, and for distortion. Because all parameters are automatable, the developer also points to its use for building drops, sweeps and other transitions. Degrader is available in VST2, AU and AAX formats for Windows and macOS.

Resampling and Bit Crushing Controls

Degrader's processing is split into a few stages. A filter section offers low pass characters before and after the resampler, each set to off, low-Q or high-Q, with the cutoff fixed to half the sample rate. The resampler lets you set any sample rate between 250 Hz and 96 kHz and adds control over jitter.

The bit crusher section reduces resolution continuously from 24 bits down to 3 bits. Klevgrand also includes an additional distortion algorithm for pushing the signal further when low bit depth alone is not enough. Input and output gain, plus a dry/wet mix, let you balance the processed signal against the original.

Automation and Workflow

Parameter linking lets one knob control several parameters at once, which keeps complex crushing and resampling moves manageable during a session. Every parameter can be automated, so sweeps and transitions can be drawn directly in your host.

Several factory presets are built to imitate different vintage gear, giving you a starting point before you adjust the controls yourself.
