Degradation Modes and Sound Character
Format's four algorithms each take a different approach. Degrade reduces bit depth and causes digital distortion. Resample lowers the sample rate to produce a second, contrasting form of digital distortion. Flatten combines a gate with bit crushing, reducing resolution only during transients, so peaks are degraded while the rest of the signal stays cleaner. Washed adds an underwater character, which Excite Audio describes as a corrupted, low-quality MP3.
The Crush control, with its advanced multiband processing, sets how strongly the signal is reduced. Frequency Smoothing and noise generation controls shape the texture of the result.
