01Overview

Soundiron built this library around the raw, percussive sound of heavy bamboo poles. Players strike, scrape and grind the poles against a stone floor, and the recordings capture everything from short clacks to long, roaring textures. The library is recorded in a tile and stone hall, so its epic percussion carries a large room character. It is organized as a single Kontakt instrument with articulations, a modular effects rack and a set of custom FX presets.

Percussion and Textures from Bamboo Poles

The core of the library is percussion. Soundiron sampled 8-foot bamboo poles with a 2-inch diameter, and the instrument includes high and low stabs, single-shot sustains, tremolos and looping sustains. The three instrument categories are Percussion, Tonal Effects and Special FX.

Beyond the impacts, the library includes drones, screeches, roars and horn-like wails made by grinding the bamboo against stone. The developer describes these as a way to push a simple, non-traditional object into a wide range of tones. The library contains 456 stereo samples at 24-bit / 48 kHz, totaling 592 MB installed.

Kontakt Controls and Effects Rack

The Kontakt interface offers automation-ready controls for swell, attack, release, offset, vibrato, filter, coarse and fine pitch, articulation switching, cross-fading and layering. An adaptable LFO system lets you choose the shape, target, speed, intensity, tempo sync and fade-in time.

The arpeggiator has a velocity table and controls for direction, timing, swing, randomization and duration, and a key and scale lock keeps melodies in common scales. The modular FX rack provides 18 DSP modules across 10 slots that you can order freely. The convolution reverb includes 99 room, hall, chamber and outdoor impulse responses plus 40 custom FX impulses.

Who Uses This Library

The library suits scoring work that needs epic percussion, since the developer built it around that goal. Its drones and roars also fit sound design and ambient textures. Because the samples are unlocked WAV files, you can load them into other WAV-compatible software, samplers and synths as well as Kontakt.

Questions, answered

What do I need to use Bamboo Stick Ensemble?

You need the full retail version of Native Instruments Kontakt 5.5 or later to use the included NKI instrument presets. The free Kontakt Player does not support this open-format library and runs it only in a limited demo mode.

Which operating systems does it support?

The library supports Windows 7 or higher and Mac OS X 10.9 or higher. Both require a dual-core CPU and 2 GB of system RAM, and an SSD or SATA drive is recommended.

Can I edit the samples and presets?

Yes. The Kontakt presets and WAV samples are unlocked, so you can customize them. The sample directories can also be used in other WAV-compatible software.

Is this library suitable for melodic playing?

The library includes tonal effects and an arpeggiator with a key and scale lock, which help keep notes in common scales. The developer's focus is percussion, drones and special FX.
