Artillery Shell Cello is a Kontakt library from Soundiron based on a cello recorded with a metal artillery shell as its body. The library is sampled in 24-bit, 48 kHz uncompressed WAV and totals 17.6 GB installed. Two microphone positions can be mixed: close cardioid microphones and a contact pickup. The instrument is aimed at producers who want an unusual, metallic string sound with expressive playing options.

Sound and Articulations

Artillery Shell Cello covers the core string techniques through its Main preset. Sustains and shorts are included, along with trills, effects and dynamic expressions. Short articulations include staccatos, spiccatos and pizzicatos, with up to eight round-robins per note depending on the articulation.

The Legato preset offers true legato and portamento. Fingered legato and a mezzo-forte glissando legato can be switched instantly, so you can play quick slurred runs or long, smooth melodies.

Phrases, Sequencer and Workflow

The Phrases preset contains hundreds of live phrases in major and minor keys, with more than 380 phrases in every key according to the developer. A sequencer allows up to 32 steps per sequence, with independent start, stop and pitch controls for each step.

Playback direction can be set to looping, single shot, forward, reverse or random. The interface includes a multi-mic mixer and an Effects and Space panel for shaping tone, balance and acoustic environment, plus key-switch mapping with save and load options.
