Apocalypse Percussion Micro is the starter edition of Soundiron's Apocalypse Percussion Ensemble library. It focuses on ensemble drums played by groups of three to six players, recorded in a large, open hall. The library covers bass drums, concert snares, and several world percussion instruments, including Indian dhol, Turkish doumbek, Irish bodhrán, Egyptian riq and Greek daf. Three master presets handle the articulation selection, arpeggiation and effects, and a convolution reverb with 119 spaces is included.

Sound, Articulations and Ensemble Recording

Each articulation was performed by an ensemble of one drum type, with between three and six players playing in unison. Soundiron says the sets are captured with a wide large-diaphragm close mic array in the same hall used for its choir and piano libraries.

The library provides up to 12 dynamic velocity layers per articulation, with two round-robin variations per velocity. The 28 articulations are spread across seven bass drum, six concert snare, four dhol, three doumbek, and single bodhrán, riq and daf sets.

Kit Building, Arpeggiator and Effects Workflow

The master ensemble preset gives access to the full articulation set with performance controls for attack, release and transient start offset. A Megamixer preset lets you build a drum kit from up to eight sockets, and a dual-layer preset plays any articulation as a pitched instrument across the keyboard, with two articulations combined.

The multi-mode arpeggiator includes a step sequencer for pattern creation. The effects rack covers EQ, filter, phaser, flanger, delay, distortion and amp and speaker simulation, alongside the convolution reverb.
