01Overview

Tuned Artillery is a plugin from Soundiron that turns recordings of WWI and WWII era brass shell casings into playable instruments. The library also includes an Eastern Bloc infantry combat helmet and a few decommissioned modern hand grenades. Each object was captured with multiple velocity layers and articulations, including dry booth recordings alongside hall recordings, giving producers a wide palette of metallic pings, scrapes, clunks and bounces for score, sound design and experimental work.

Sound and Character of the Metallic Samples

Each source object is struck on its sides, edges and base with mallets, sticks, brushes or bare hands, and the samples keep the resonance of the brass. Soundiron recorded every piece in four mic positions, so the samples cover close, wide and far perspectives.

The library includes both tuned and untuned material. Pitched shell sounds can be played over a key range, while untuned hits work as anvil-like percussive accents. The 24 bit / 48 kHz uncompressed WAV samples leave room for detailed processing.

Workflow, Controls and Included Presets

The Kontakt interface offers swell, attack, release, offset, vibrato, filter, coarse and fine pitch, articulation switching, cross-fading and layering controls. An LFO system with selectable shapes, tempo sync and fade-in time sits alongside 12 filters and an arpeggiator with velocity table, direction, swing and randomization.

The library ships with three master NKI instrument banks, 64 ambience patches built from the source content, and 20 sound-designed FX and ambient presets. A key and scale lock helps keep melodic lines in key.
