01Overview

AudioThing built Things – Voice around a single main control, aimed at making a voice loud and smooth with minimal setup. The developer describes its compression circuit as an unusual design taken from a 1950s German instrument originally used to test radio transmitters. An optional tube saturation stage lets you add gain with overtones, and a bass boost adds low-end weight. It is the seventh plugin in AudioThing's collaboration with the Berlin musician Hainbach.

Compression Character and Tube Saturation

The compressor is modeled on a radio broadcast instrument from the 1950s, which Rogalow Audio's Wojcek Czern adapted into a mic preamp. The developer says this origin gives the compressor a smooth, pleasing action on the signal.

The tube saturation button adds gain with overtone-rich coloration. AudioThing says the saturation is authentically modded to bring the tone closer to the original unit. Because the saturation is separate from the compressor, you can use the gain character without the compression, or both together.

Controls, Bass Boost and Presets

Things – Voice keeps the interface simple. The main control sets the amount of compression, and a bass boost adds low-end emphasis at frequencies the developer chose for a euphonic result.

A preset system includes a randomizer, which is useful for exploring settings quickly. The window is resizable, so the controls can be enlarged for easier adjustment.
