SSL Native X-Comp: Stereo Compressor Plugin by Solid State Logic

X-Comp is designed for two ends of the dynamics spectrum. At the subtle end, it shapes dynamics in a way that can stay largely unnoticed, which suits mastering work. At the other end, it can be pushed into brickwall-style limiting that adds density and punch.

The developer says the plugin can reproduce the characteristics of several compressor types, including OPTO, FET and Vari Mu designs. Rather than modeling one specific unit, it provides a set of controls intended to cover a broad range of compressor behaviors.

The developer also notes that the plugin is intended to sound distinctly analogue in character.

The dual symmetrical knee design lets you shape the transition into compression in detail. The sidechain architecture supports ducking, pumping and de-essing, so the same tool can handle creative gain movement and corrective work.

The interface uses click-and-drag controls, and MIDI can be used to manipulate parameters in real time, which is useful for automating compression during a session or performance.
